Returning from a three-year hiatus (during which singer and guitarist Myles Kennedy worked extensively with rock icon Slash), Alter Bridge unleash their fourth full-length Fortress. The group sounds well-oiled despite the break. What has always separated Alter Bridge from so many post-grunge acts are their snarling rhythms and white-hot fretwork. On "Cry of Achilles," "Addicted to Pain" and the Alice In Chains-inspired "Farther than the Sun" these qualities are only further pushed to the fore. Another keeper is "The Uninvited," which pivots on jagged syncopation and Kennedy's pained howls.
