Actress' fourth album sounds a lot like his first three: sluggish, sullen and resolutely lo-fi. His beats are leaden, his bass lines frayed, his loops all but unchanging. It's slow-motion techno for heavy hearts and muddled heads. Save for the relatively upbeat, disco-influenced "Gaze," there's even less to latch onto than usual (which is saying something, for an Actress record). But the album's brooding refusal to play nice somehow makes it all the more seductive.
